Tiny microgreens pack a mighty punch

Burpee Gardening

They may be tiny, but a new study shows trendy microgreens punch well above their weight when it comes to nutrition.

Researchers found microgreens like red cabbage, cilantro, and radish contain up to 40 times higher levels of vital nutrients than their mature counterparts.

Microgreens are young seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs harvested less than 14 days after germination. They are usually about 1-3 inches long and come in a rainbow of colors, which has made them popular in recent years as garnishes with chefs.

Although nutritional claims about microgreens abound on the Internet, this study is the first scientific evaluation of their nutritional content. Researchers say they were astonished by the results.

“The microgreens were four- to 40-fold more concentrated with nutrients than their mature counterparts,” says researcher Qin Wang, PhD, assistant professor at the University of Maryland in College Park. “When we first got the results we had to rush to double and triple check them.”

For example, red cabbage microgreens had 40 times more vitamin E and six times more vitamin C than mature red cabbage. Cilantro microgreens had three times more beta-carotene than mature cilantro.

Microgreens Pack Nutritional Punch

Researchers evaluated levels of four groups of vital nutrients, including vitamin K, vitamin C vitamin E, lutein, and beta-carotene, in 25 different commercially grown microgreens.

The results are published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin E levels were highest among red cabbage, garnet, amaranth, and green daikon radish microgreens.

Cilantro microgreens were richest in terms of lutein and beta-carotene.

“All of these nutrients are extremely important for skin, eyes, and fighting cancer and have all sorts of benefits associated with them,” says researcher Gene Lester, PhD, of the USDA.

Lester said he was surprised to find microgreens were superior in nutritional value than the mature plants.

“To find that the levels were not only detectible but in some cases 4-6 times more concentrated than in the leaves of a mature plant, I find that quite astonishing.”

Although more research is needed, Wang says there may be a good explanation for microgreens’ high nutrient content.

“Because microgreens are harvested right after germination, all the nutrients they need to grow are there,” says Wang. “If they are harvested at the right time they are very concentrated with nutrients, and the flavor and texture is also good.”

Lessen and Eliminate Old Scars

Scars

by Tony Isaacs

Few of us go through life without accumulating a few scars. Sometimes those scars can be unsightly and in other instances old scars and scar tissue can cause physical discomfort and other problems. If a person is persistent however, scars can often be greatly diminished and even eliminated naturally. Before opting for cosmetic surgery, chemical peels or botox, consider the following safer options:

Mountain Rose Herbs. A Herbs, Health & Harmony Com

The first item to consider is digestive enzymes, which are particularly effective in removing and reducing scar tissue. Scars are formed from fibrin as part of the body’s natural repair mechanism. Digestive enzymes dissolve and remove fibrin. Serrapeptase and nattokinase are among the best enzymes for scar tissue removal. Taking the enzymes in quantity 2-3 times daily on an empty stomach gradually dissolves scar tissue. In time even old scar tissue, including keloids, can be dissolved and “eaten away”.

Other natural remedies for lessening and eliminating scars are:

*Applying and massaging lavender oil directly on scars helps them fade and in time can completely eliminate scars. Lavender oil also helps newer injuries heal faster with the application of lavender oil.

*Flaxseed oil is a great way to fade scars. You can buy it at almost any health food store. It is also great for new scars, helping them heal faster and keeping them from becoming as noticeable. Rub the flaxseed oil on old and new scars a few times each day, including after you shower and again before going to bed.

*Virgin, unrefined hempseed oil used twice daily often results in improvement and fading within a few weeks

*Grapeseed extract, jojoba and almond oil are all effective scar treatments, especially when combined together.

*Apply vitamin K cream topically to scars. Depending on the severity of your scars and skin type, you may see results in as little as a couple of weeks to a couple of months when used twice daily.

*Apply olive oil (100% extra virgin) to scars at least twice a day. Within a week you should start to see scars and stretch marks starting to fade.

*Organic raw honey (especially high UMF factor manuka honey) rubbed onto scars twice daily will break up scar tissue and help with healing.

*Take finely ground, powder-like, coffee and mix it with one of the oils mentioned here. Rub into scars for about 60 seconds and wipe off the coffee grounds with a warm moist towel. Do this about twice a day if possible. You should see noticeable results in a few weeks. This remedy is especially good for stretch mark scars.

*Use castor oil, plastic wrap and a heating pad. Note: Be sure to use only food grade plastic wrap that contains no bisphenol A, a dangerous substance found in many plastics. Rub plenty of castor oil on the scars and then wrap it with plastic wrap. Place a heating pad turned on as high a setting as you comfortably stand and leave on for 20 to 25 minutes. You may see noticeable results in as little as a week or so.

*Use vitamin E oil from punctured gel caps and rub it into scars.

* Colloidal Silver. Colloidal silver is especially good on healing wounds. It aids in tissue repair and can result in significantly lessened scarring.

*Massaging your scars often and consistently will help break up the fibrous tissue and can be especially effective when combined with one of the oils mentioned above.

Note: The key to natural lessening and elimination of scar tissue is persistence. Serious scars may take up to several months, but with persistent and consistent effort you should eventually see good results.

coconuts

I can not find a single bad thing about coconut oil.  And there isn’t anything  you can’t do with it!
I’ve never had a chemical based product exfoliate my skin the way coconut oil does.  My husband shaves with it and it has completely eliminated his razor bumps along in addition to using it as a hair conditioner.
It heals cuts and infections, can sooth psoriasis or eczema.
Can be used on nipples to soften for nursing mothers as well as preventing thrush in nursing infants.  Topically it will prevent stretch marks during pregnancy.
Used topically to kill yeast infections, jock itch and nail fungus and as well as internally (soaked on a tampon) to treat Candida.
Just eating a spoonful of it a day does your body a world of wonder research is now showing that it can prevent, slow and even reverse Alzheimer’s symptoms!  As soon as it hits your mouth it feels lighter than water.
Mixing coconut oil with baking soda and a couple of drops of peppermint oil makes the best whitening toothpaste you’ve ever used, it’s antibacterial to control bad breath and gingivitis and will even help to remineralize and strengthen teeth.  Mix with cornstarch for an all-natural deodorant.
You can use coconut oil as your primary carrier for any essential oil it, you’ll love how it absorbs into the skin without feeling greasy.   I have a container with coconut oil and tea tree oil in my home at all times.  It will knock out an ear infection quicker than anything I know (in fact, this mixture is my medical doctor’s preference over antibiotics).
Makes a perfect baby lotion as well as a diaper cream.  A perfect moisturizer for the face and eye makeup remover as well as a cuticle oil for the nails.
You can find it just about everywhere, look at your local grocery store by the olive oil.  Only use organic on the skin, the regular coconut oil is heavier, has a more pronounced flavor and an almost grainy texture before it melts.
Great for cooking too!  It has a high smoke point.  It can replace any oil in cooking and can even replace butter in recipes and can replace oil in homemade mayonnaise.  In fact, check out this great video on seasoning your stainless steel pans!  I’ve done this, it works!

Organic coconut oil: A superfood with amazing health benefits

by Christian David

Pound for pound, coconut oil is one of the single most nutritious superfoods you can put in your body. It has a vast array of incredible health benefits and is something recommended to almost everyone I talk to on a regular basis. People are always asking me, Chris “What can I eat to be healthier”? The answer is simple: organic coconut oil. This stuff is simply amazing and is something everyone should include in their diet.

Specifically, you should look for “Organic, unrefined, expeller-pressed coconut oil”. This is the unprocessed product derived directly from the organic coconuts with minimal processing or modification. This is as close to “unprocessed” you can get. The more foods are processed, the less the health value they offer. You can find this on the shelves of most all natural foods stores or purchase online.

There are a couple ways to eat coconut oil. Some people cook with it. I recommend eating it in an unheated, uncooked manner. Reason being is high heat levels can change the properties of the oil, (further processing it), and therefore affect the overall nutritional value.

Eating coconut oil on a regular basis has numerous health benefits. If you do some basic research on the health benefits on coconut oil you will discover just how amazing this food really is. These benefits include healthier skin and hair, lower cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased levels of immunity, proper digestion and metabolism. It has been show to provide relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and other viruses, cancer, and bone strength. The reason it is so effective and healthy is because of high levels of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. The presence of these acids contributes to coconuts antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial and general body nourishing properties.

There are a couple ways to use coconut oil. Some people cook with it. Coconut oil is rare in that it has a high melting point. This means it’s a solid form at room temperature. It doesn’t melt until about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. You will notice when you purchase a bottle, it will be in solid form. It doesn’t take much heat for this to melt.

If you are using coconut oil for topical purposes (hair or skin application) you can bring it to a liquid form simply by immersing a container with the solid oil into warm water. It will melt in a matter of a few moments. You can also take a small amount out, put it in a small bowl and heat over an open flame. Do not microwave as it will affect the healing properties of the oil. Next, take the oil on your palm and apply it to your hair, face and skin. You will notice healthier skin and hair if you do this regularly. For cooking, try using coconut oil instead of vegetable oil or butter.

For maximum health value, I personally recommend consuming it in an unheated, uncooked manner. To do this, simply open the bottle and use a table spoon to eat the product. It will melt in your mouth. If you have a problem with taste or swallowing it, take it with some organic orange juice after it melts in your mouth.

Is your cold medicine damaging your health?

coldflu2

by Dr. Ben Kim – Drbenkim.com

The next time you experience a cold or the flu, remember this: rather than take conventional drugs to suppress uncomfortable symptoms, it’s better for your health to allow the cold or flu to run its course while you get plenty of physical and emotional rest.

Conventional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry would have you believe that there is no “cure” for the common cold, that you should protect yourself against the flu with a vaccine that is laden with toxic chemicals, and that during the midst of a cold or flu, it is favorable to ease your discomfort with a variety of medications that can suppress your symptoms.

Unfortunately, all three of these positions indicate a lack of understanding of what colds and flus really are, and what they do for your body.

Colds and flus are caused by viruses. So to understand what colds and flus do at a cellular level, you have to understand what viruses do at a cellular level.

Do you remember learning about cellular division in grade seven science class? Each of your cells are called parent cells, and through processes of genetic duplication (mitosis) and cellular division (cytokinesis), each of your parent cells divides into two daughter cells. Each daughter cell is then considered a parent cell that will divide into two more daughter cells, and so on.

Viruses are different from your cells in that they cannot duplicate themselves through mitosis and cytokinesis. Viruses are nothing but microscopic particles of genetic material, each coated by a thin layer of protein.

Due to their design, viruses are not able to reproduce on their own. The only way that viruses can flourish in your body is by using the machinery and metabolism of your cells to produce multiple copies of themselves.

Once a virus has gained access into one of your cells, depending on the type of virus involved, one of two things can happen:

1. The virus uses your cell’s resources to replicate itself many times over and then breaks open (lyses) the cell so that the newly replicated viruses can leave in search of new cells to infect. Lysis effectively kills your cell.

2. The virus incorporates itself into the DNA of your cell, which allows the virus to be passed on to each daughter cell that stems from this cell. Later on, the virus in each daughter cell can begin replicating itself as described above. Once multiple copies of the virus have been produced, the cell is lysed.

Both possibilities lead to the same result: eventually, the infected cell can die due to lysis.

Puritan's Pride: Aromatherapy - Buy 1 Get 1 Free

Here is the key to understanding why colds and flus, when allowed to run their course while you rest, can be good for you:

– By and large, the viruses that cause the common cold and the flu infect mainly your weakest cells; cells that are already burdened with excessive waste products and toxins are most likely to allow viruses to infect them. These are cells that you want to get rid of anyway, to be replaced by new, healthy cells.

So in the big scheme of things, a cold or flu is a natural event that can allow your body to purge itself of old and damaged cells that, in the absence of viral infection, would normally take much longer to identify, destroy, and eliminate.

Have you ever been amazed by how much “stuff” you could blow out of your nose while you had a cold or the flu? Embedded within all of that mucous are countless dead cells that your body is saying good bye to, largely due to the lytic effect of viruses.

So you see, there never needs to be a cure for the common cold, since the common cold is nature’s way of keeping you healthy over the long term. And so long as you get plenty of rest and strive to stay hydrated and properly nourished during a cold or flu, there is no need to get vaccinated or to take medications that suppress congested sinuses, a fever, or coughing. All of these uncomfortable symptoms are actually ways in which your body works to eliminate waste products and/or help your body get through a cold or flu. It’s fine to use over-the-counter pain medication like acetaminophen if your discomfort becomes intolerable or if such meds can help you get a good night’s rest. But it’s best to avoid medications that aim to suppress helpful processes such as fever, coughing, and a runny nose.

It’s important to note that just because colds and flus can be helpful to your body doesn’t mean that you need to experience them to be at your best. If you take good care of your health and immune system by getting plenty of rest and consistently making health-promoting dietary and lifestyle choices, your cells may stay strong enough to avoid getting infected by viruses that come knocking on their membranes. In this scenario, you won’t have enough weak and extraneous cells to require a cold or the flu to work its way through your body to identify and lyse them.

Curious about how to differentiate the common cold and the flu?

– A cold usually comes on gradually — over the course of a day or two. Generally, it leaves you feeling tired, sneezing, coughing and plagued by a running nose. You often don’t have a fever, but when you do, it’s only slightly higher than normal. Colds usually last three to four days, but can hang around for 10 days to two weeks.

– Flu, on the other hand, comes on suddenly and hits hard. You will feel weak and tired and you could run a fever as high as 40 C. Your muscles and joints will probably ache, you will feel chilled and could have a severe headache and sore throat. Getting off the couch or out of bed will be a chore. The fever may last three to five days, but you could feel weak and tired for two to three weeks.

One final note on this topic: because the common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses, antibiotics are not necessary. People who take antibiotics while suffering with a cold or flu often feel slightly better because antibiotics have a mild anti-inflammatory effect. But this benefit is far outweighed by the negative impact that antibiotics have on friendly bacteria that live throughout your digestive tract. In this light, if you really need help with pain management during a cold or flu, it is usually better to take a small dose of acetaminophen than it is to take antibiotics.
